Language Arts – Learning to Write with IEW (Institute for Excellence in Writing) Younger Class

Grade 3-6. Instructor: Mary Wayda (Miss Mary)

Classes fall under the grade levels for our science classes.  However, IEW is dependent on writing and reading levels rather than a child’s age or grade.  Please contact Mary to determine which class would best suit your child.  Older students who are just beginning IEW or formal written compositions will learn a great deal from this class.

Locations:

  • Carson, Monday, 2:00-3:00
  • White Salmon, Thursday, 11:00-12:00
  • The Dalles, Wednesday, 11:30-12:30

Come and learn how to write with IEW’s easy to learn method of adding one new style or structure at a time.  It’s super easy and fun!  We will learn to write creatively with easy to learn techniques that make the days of the boring sentences like “Jane runs fast.” disappear!

Students will be taught a lesson (and play fun review games) at each class and then will need to spend about 45 minutes a day finishing their writing assignment before the next class.  This time frame can vary  greatly depending on the student.  If parents wish, I am happy to grade their student’s papers and provide feedback.

Parents will need to purchase their student’s IEW workbook: Discoveries in Writing, currently listed on IEW’s website for $29.00 plus shipping.  Purchase only the student book.  Some fun topics we will be writing and learning about are:  Mount Everest, Matterhorn, Alfred the Great, a couple famous fables, Old Faithful, Tsunamis, the French and Indian War, Bunker Hill; and once we fine tune our writing skills, we will use our imaginations and write about some favorite hobbies, people and places we enjoy!

Cost of class:  $425 for 30 weeks, includes registration fee.  There are two payment options –

1 – Pay in full at parent meetings in August – $425.00

2 – Pay registration fee at parent meetings in August and then class cost in 3 equal payments due on September 1st, February 1st, and April 1st

Language Arts – Learning to Write with IEW (Institute for Excellence in Writing) Older Class for Experienced Writers

Grade 7-12. Instructor: Mary Wayda (Miss Mary)

Classes fall under the grade levels for our science classes. However, IEW is dependent on writing and reading levels rather than a child’s age or grade. Please contact Mary to determine which class would best suit your child.

Location:

  • Carson, Monday, 12:45-1:45
  • White Salmon, Thursday, 9:30-10:30
  • The Dalles, Wednesday, 1:00-2:00

It is assumed that students in this class are already comfortable with most of the basic elements of style and structure taught in IEW.  We will begin this course reviewing these elements, but at a rapid pace.  The lessons soon progress to more advanced and fun concepts such as alliterations, metaphors, similes, etc.

Students will be taught a lesson (and if time allows, play fun review games) at each class and then will need to spend about 45-60 minutes a day finishing their writing assignment before the next class.  This time frame can vary greatly depending on the student.  If parents wish, I am happy to grade their students papers and provide feedback.

Students will write a variety of essays, such as argumentative, persuasive, contrast, and two literary analysis essays which will require them to read Uncle Tom’s Cabin and To Kill a Mockingbird.  They will also conduct their own research for a variety of essays.

Reading level for this class is 7th-12th grade.  Depending on writing and reading skills, assignments can be modified for the younger or lesser experienced writer.  Flexibility is key in IEW and in homeschooling!

Parents will need to purchase their student’s IEW workbook:  Advanced U.S. History-Based Writing Lessons, currently listed on IEW’s website for $35.00 plus shipping.  Students will also need a specific edition of Uncle Tom’s Cabin and To Kill a Mockingbird as the IEW book refers to specific pages in those books.  Of course, the library is always an option, as long as the particular edition is found.  This is listed on page 5 of the workbook.

Drawing With Spanish

Location: White Salmon, Thursdays 3:00-4:00

Instructors: John Estey & Elizabeth Estey

Join us for a new and engaging class that blends conversational Spanish with the powerful fundamentals of drawing, led by local artists Juan and Elizabeth Estey. Juan will focus on teaching Spanish through drawing, helping you develop your own drawing style, start your own sketchbook, and build  fun and creative habits. He will break down his daily drawing process, expand students’ Spanish vocabulary, and guide them in becoming better observers of the world around us.

This class includes Spanish practice through drawing, hands-on work in a personal sketchbook, and guided exercises exploring the core fundamentals of art: line weight, gesture, form/shape, cartooning and light/shadow—all designed to improve skill and spark inspiration to draw more. As a class project, each student will work toward filling an entire sketchbook.

When Juan teaches, he will emphasize drawing while naturally increasing Spanish vocabulary. When Elizabeth teaches, she will emphasize Spanish through creative art.

Each student will receive their own sketchbook and a ballpoint pen. That’s right—no erasers.

Cost of Class: $325 (includes registration fee).

Two payment options:

1 – Pay in full at registration $325.00

2 – Pay registration fee upon registration and then class cost in 3 equal payments of $100.00 due on September 1st, February 1st, and April 1st.
