This class blends learning state history, national park geography and planning realistic family road trips to the parks we study.  Students will learn about ten western states, eighteen western national parks and plan five road trips to them all!  In preparation for planning these five road trips, students will be introduced to each state, learn about the flower, bird, capital, location in the U.S., lots of fun and interesting facts about the state, and hear a true and engaging story from the state’s history.  Then we will learn about the amazing beauty God has created and protected in our national parks.  We will have an interactive day to plan a road trip to one or more of the parks just learned.  Students will be given a trip planner to calculate the costs, including all the components of a vacation – time/gas involved to arrive at their destination using road maps to plan their route, cost of camping vs. hotels, food costs, entrance fees, and other activities.  We will also engage in some fun hands-on activities related to the nature of the park’s landscapes.  We will cap off the year by comparing all these five wonderful road trips to a trip to Disneyland and discuss the pros and cons of each.

Parents do not need to purchase any materials for their students.
