Language Arts – Learning to Write with IEW (Institute for Excellence in Writing). Grade 3-6. Instructor: Mary Wayda (Miss Mary)

Locations:

  • White Salmon, Thursday, 10:30-11:30
  • The Dalles, Wednesday, 1:00-2:00

Come and learn how to write with IEW’s easy to learn method of adding one new style or structure at a time.  It’s super easy and fun!  We will learn to write creatively with easy to learn techniques that make the days of the boring sentences like “Jane runs fast.” disappear!

Students will be taught a lesson (and play fun review games) at each class and then will need to spend about 45 minutes a day finishing their writing assignment before the next class.  This timeframe varies greatly depending on the student.  It could take much less than 45 minutes a day over the remaining 4 days of the school week.  If parents wish to grade their children’s assignments, I will provide the IEW’s rubric, or I am happy to grade them for the students and provide feedback.

Reading level for this class is 3rd-5th, but older students who are just beginning IEW or formal written compositions will learn a great deal  from this class.  Each parent can choose where their child fits best.  I am happy to discuss or answer questions over the phone if needed.

Parents will need to purchase their student’s IEW workbook:  Frontiers in Writing.  Currently, they are $35.00

Class begins September 3rd  and 4th and runs through April 22nd and 23rd

Cost of class:  $425 for 30 weeks.  This includes a $25 registration fee to maintain the website and other expenditures for The Hive.  There are two payment options –

1 – Pay in full at registration $425.00

2 – Pay registration fee upon registration and then class cost in 3 equal payments of $142.00 due on September 1st, February 1st, and April 1st

Reader’s Theater (4-6th grade reading level)
White Salmon, Thursday, Time: TBD
Instructor Amy Nelson

Reader’s Theater is a great opportunity for students to read with proper speed, accuracy and expression. One of the best ways to improve reading fluency is to read a text multiple times. With reader’s theater, students can enjoy drama without the pressure of memorization. Instead, students will follow a script, wait for their part, and work as a group to tell the story. Is your child anxious about reading aloud? Reader’s Theater is a great way to improve reading fluency and deepen their literacy skills. Students won’t be required to read aloud until they feel comfortable. In this class, we learn how to “prep the script” which means listening and following along encouraging students to engage one word at a time when ready.

To get the most out of the class, students should be reading at a 3rd grade reading level or higher.

The price of the class covers printing costs for all scripts and materials.

$40/month or $240 for the whole year. Maximum of 8 kids, first come first serve.
